Degree holders turn their backs on mega cities for better lifestyle choices

The population of college graduates is projected to reach a record high this year, turning an

already tough job market into a pressure cooker and intensifying the scramble for talent nationwide.

To many new graduates, mega cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, Guangdong province, are less attractive beca

use of their high cost of living and greater peer pressure in the job market. And so the graduates are looking elsewhere.

The trend is changing the employment landscape in China, but it’s good news for sec

ond- and third-tier cities. The mega cities’ loss could be their gain in the brain drain game.

The move followed a State Council decision in April to es

tablish a policy framework for applying a fairly low RRR for small and medium-

sized banks in a bid to lower financing costs for MSEs.

Home prices in 70 major Chinese cities continued to stabilize despite slight increases in April, official data showed Thursday.

New home prices in four first-tier cities — Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou — increased 0.6 percent month

on month in April, up from the 0.2-percent increase in March, said the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in a statement.

New home prices climbed 0.8 percent in 31 second-tier cities, and rose 0.5 percent in 35 third-tier cities.

As for resold homes, prices in the four first-tier cities reported a 0.4-percent growth mo

nth on month, while those in 31 second-tier cities went up 0.6 percent, narrowing from the 1.2-percent increase in March.

Fretting about weight has become a common topic for

discussion among Chinese women-and not just at the office. Such discussions can be heard

everywhere, from high school classrooms to fitness studios, beauty salons and department stores.

But the issue is not just cause for concern in China. Obsessing over body shape has also emerged in Western countries over the past decade.

The term “fat talk” was coined by United States anthropologist Mimi Nic

hter and her team of researchers in 1994 after they observed the way girls in middle school

spoke about their body shapes-unexpectedly revealing that they invariably focused on the negatives.

Since then, numerous studies have detailed how pervasive “fat talk” has become among women of all ages.

A study published in the Psychology of Women Quarterly in 2011 found that an “overwhelm

ing majority of women”-93 percent-admitted to discussing the issue, with one-third of them doing so frequently.

Balancing growth with structural reformting perform

After a disappointing performance in 2018, China’s economy appears to be stabiliz

ing. In the first quarter of 2019, GDP growth, at 6.4 percent year-on-year, matched that of the previous quarter. But grow

th in industrial production exceeded expectations, expanding by 6.5 percent year-on-year (and by 8.5 percent in Mar

ch). Even exports growth was positive, albeit weak, despite the ongoing trade frictions with the United States.

Moreover, fixed-asset investment (FAI) grew by 6.3 percent-0.2 percentage points higher than in the previous quar

ter. Investment in real estate grew the fastest (11.8 percent), followed by manufacturing (4.6 percent) and in

frastructure (4.4 percent). The growth of investment both in real estate and infrastru

cture was stronger not only sequentially, but also year-on-year. As usual, consumption growth was stable.

Horticultural exhibits delve into high-tech magic

The ongoing International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 in Beijing is all about gar

dening, but it doesn’t shy away from high technology that improves visitors’ experience.

To provide visitors with information services, ticket purchasing, parking, travel routes, introductions to scenic sp

ots, medical services, performance arrangements and traveling tips, a mobile phone app called Expo 2019 was developed.

It’s like having a tour guide at hand, said Guo Ziliang, an official at the Beijing World Horticultural Expo Coordination Bureau, the expo’s organizer.

“The app shows people how to conveniently and efficiently make their way through the park,” he said. “It also helps improve the park’s reception capacity.”

The 162-day expo, from April 29 to Oct 7, is expected to receive a total of 16 million visitors.

The app, available in bilingual versions-English and Chinese-can be downloaded for free from online app stores.

It is welcome news to hear that the National People’s

Congress has already taken steps to lay the groundwork” for implementing the new Fo

reign Investment Law, said Gupta, who brought up the possibility of China establishing “an ombudsperson’s desk” in

related government agencies to address foreign businesses’ legal concerns.

Gupta said China’s Foreign Investment Law could be a model for others looking to liberalize their foreign investment regi

mes, as China’s BRI is already delivering capital and know-how to other developing countries.

Overholt said that China’s past opening-up has been “extremely positive” gl

obally, and the BRI is a “very positive” vision that is good for China and the world.

“The key will be the implementation,” he said. “If the implementation is improved, it would be good for everyone.”

Ruwan Wijewardene, Sri Lankan state defense min

nister, said on Tuesday that Islamic extremists staged the attacks in

Sri Lanka in retaliation to the shootings in two New Zealand mosques in March that claimed 50 lives.

And the blasts lay bare several threats confronting the whole world. First

of all, the reflux of IS terrorists formerly active in Iraq and Syria to countries that have not su

ffered large-scale serial terrorist strikes in a while poses a serious threat to their people’s safety.

Sri Lanka had enjoyed relative peace after the Liberation Tige

rs of Tamil Eelam, a militant organization demandin

g a separate homeland for Tamils in northeastern Sri Lanka, was defeated in 2009.

Governments have been keeping a close watch on the small nu

mber of people that have returned to their countries after atten

ding IS training camps. Yet the lack of coordination mechanisms among countries seemin

gly helps the terrorists evade surveillance and collude with extremist forces outside their countries.
